The national longing to see Katie Taylor fight at Croke Park doesn't mean that the fight – and the promoters' profit margins – should be subsidised by the state or the GAA.
Rivalry within and between sporting codes has inhibited ground-sharing and taxpayers’ money has already been spent, or allocated, for stadium developments without persuasive plans for adequate utilisation. Or any credible plans at all.
A number of GAA players are considering walking away from the sport because of the joylessness of the games during lockdowns. Interventions might be necessary again but they make it harder to enjoy a sport that is a hobby.
