Barryroe Offshore Energy, formerly Providence Resources, is a €52 million company that’s in the unusual position of being totally dependent on one person: the Minister for the Environment, Communications and Climate, Eamon Ryan. Barryroe needs Ryan’s sign-off to go ahead with its oil drilling project. Barryroe owns 80 per cent of the Barryroe field, off the coast of Kinsale. Though nobody knows for sure, separate teams of geologists have estimated there is as much as 81 million barrels down there, as well as some gas.
