Last February, a Galway farmer and horse breeder re-occupied five houses that had been seized by an AIB-appointed receiver and rented them out to new tenants. The colourful story in the Sunday Independent reported that Justin Burke, the subject of a €5.8 million judgment from the bank, acted out of frustration at seeing the properties “go to rack and ruin” during a housing crisis and over his concern that lost rental income had made his debt position worse.
