The borderlands have always been a place of mystery and tension. What is true of the border counties of Ireland is equally true of other partitioned places in Europe and across the world. The West Cork History Festival will host a talk on Saturday at Inish Beg by Edward Burke, assistant professor of the history of war at UCD, on “Paramilitaries, inter-generational violence and feud in Ulster’s borderlands”. The topic is the subject of a book Burke has written to be published next year, called Ulster’s Lost Counties. It is a study of perhaps a forgotten aspect of Irish history…
