Rows about insurance have a circular quality. Business owners allege they’re being ripped off. Insurance companies say claims are out of control. Lawyers point to insurance company profits. And on and on. The argument has been going on for five years or more, and we’re no wiser for it. The problem is that most insurance companies are opaque. The big insurers in Ireland are local divisions of much bigger multinationals like Axa, Allianz, Liberty, Aviva, RSA and Zurich. The multinationals don’t break out any figures on the Irish market.
