When Russian troops flooded into Ukraine in February 2022 as part of a large-scale invasion of its neighbour, Western powers were quick to act against the Eastern giant. Within days, hard-hitting sanctions were adopted in Washington and Brussels. They were aimed at crippling the Russian economy propping up the war machine, targeting individuals, banks, businesses, financial transfers and overall trade.
