In January 2022, businessman Richard O’Halloran returned to Ireland after nearly three years of being detained in China. O’Halloran, a director at aircraft leasing firm CALS Ireland (China International Aviation Leasing Service), travelled to Shanghai in February 2019. The company had become involved in a dispute over a crowdfunding scheme with the Chinese authorities. The row predated O’Halloran joining the firm but he travelled over to address the matter with investors.
