Stand on a street corner in the centre of any UK city, and look around, and you’re likely to see a shop selling pre-made sandwiches. The UK runs on them. In London’s square mile financial district, for example, I count more than 100 chain sandwich shops. Sandwich shops are on every corner because nobody’s bothered crossing the road for a sandwich. Convenience is paramount. The sandwiches are bought and eaten in the minimum of time. One industry estimate says the average sandwich is consumed in 210 seconds.
