The Department of Arts refused a request from the Arts Council to use €4.4 million remaining from an energy grant pot in 2023 to support the artistic community during the height of the inflation crisis. The majority of the leftover funds then had to be returned, despite pleadings with the department from the council’s most senior executive and also the chair of its board to the minister.
