In 1982, Dick Spring won the leadership of the Labour party, defeating one Michael D Higgins in the process. The Co Kerry native would go on to lead the party for the following 15 years and, as tánaiste, play a key role in one of the most crucial developments in British-Irish relations, the signing of the Anglo-Irish agreement at Hillsborough Castle, Co Down, in 1985.
