On November 21, a jury awarded substantial and aggravated damages totalling €823,500 to two human rights solicitors in a defamation case the pair took against Denis O’Brien and his spokesman, James Morrissey. At issue was a 2016 press release with the line “Sinn Féin/IRA certainly got the report they paid for”, put out by the businessman in response to a report by the human rights solicitors that was critical of him.
