In April 2024, creaking under the severe strain of increasing numbers of people seeking protection in Ireland, the Department of Equality turned to the commercial office sector to plug a refugee accommodation shortfall. A range of companies expressed interest in answering the call with plans to convert office blocks and other facilities in the capital.
