Ireland continues to lag behind on sanctions enforcement in the EU with further delays in transposing an important new directive. The sanctions directive introduced clearer definitions of criminal offences and penalties for the violation of EU sanctions, including those levelled against Russia, Iran and China. Countries had a deadline of May 2025 to transpose the directive. Nearly a year on, Ireland still has not implemented the new rules, while several other EU countries have transposed the laws in recent months.
