On November 18, 2016, tax officials in Co Kerry sent letters to 400 local farmers advising them that they were each liable for thousands of euros in unpaid income tax in relation to the year 2011. Revenue later confirmed this in formal assessments, posted during Christmas week to meet the four-year lookback deadline. The letters hit farmers as their income was on the floor amid a global price crash triggered by overproduction following the abolition of EU milk quotas in 2015.
