Every six months, Minister Eamon Ryan reports to the Oireachtas about the prospects for Ireland’s mining industry. The latest update in February 2022 revealed that just five companies are authorised to operate mines, the main one being Boliden Tara Mines, which owns Europe’s largest zinc mine at Co Meath. Mines are also being worked for marble (Co Galway), fireclay and coal (Co Laois) and gypsum (Co Monaghan). More hopefully, perhaps, the Minister’s latest report shows there are 426 prospecting licenses held by 43 companies giving the holder the right to explore for specified minerals in a certain area.
