In February 2021, The Currency revealed that a leading racecourse had lost a battle with Revenue putting the whole tax exemption enjoyed by sporting bodies into question. At the time, the Tax Appeals Commission had ruled that the company operating the racecourse could was not exempt from corporation tax because it drew revenue from non-sporting activities including catering and gambling, while it had limited control over racing activities under the supervision of Horse Racing Ireland (HRI).
