“Empty your pockets.” It’s not a phrase we all regularly hear as we make our way to the shop, the park, or a friend’s house. However, in some communities, it’s the norm. In the beginning, when it first starts happening, you protest. “I’m just going the shop, guard.” Looking up at him, your twelve-year-old self is dwarfed by his six foot stature. “I didn’t ask you where you were going; I told you to empty your pockets.” This will become the relationship with authority for many young people in working class communities.
