Jonathan Hill’s time as FAI CEO will be remembered for a payments controversy and the failure to secure a national manager. But the dysfunction that has long shaped - and derailed - the organisation is deep-rooted and culturally embedded.

The furore about top-up payments to CEO Jonathan Hill dominated the FAI’s appearance at an Oireachtas committee this week. Sadly, however, the real problems within Irish football run much deeper and will be much harder to remedy than repaying €20,000.

The FAI are right to be part of a bid for the European Championships in 2028 because their ambitions must extend beyond the audience that currently exists for domestic football in this country.

The FAI are embarked on a process of change but they continue to attract unwelcome headlines. Maybe that doesn't matter if they can get the fundamentals right.
