Gerard Delanty is a very well-known global figure within the world of academic social theory, an intellectual space in which politics, philosophy and, sociology come together. Born in Cork in 1960, where he studied sociology and philosophy, he also completed a PhD at University College Cork before research and teaching spells in Frankfurt, Hanover and Naples.  He subsequently became a lecturer at the University of Liverpool and later a professor at the University of Sussex.
