The recent Supreme Court ruling by Mr Justice Murrary found delivery drivers for Domino’s Pizza should be treated as employees and not contractors. What does this mean for Ireland’s gig economy workers and their (now) employers? The background here is tax, specifically PRSI. The Revenue Commissioners figured Domino’s workers were workers and so the company trading as Domino’s Pizza, Karshan (Midlands) Ltd, was therefore responsible in the usual way for most of the taxes that most employers pay most workers, like PRSI.
