Years of morbid anticipation and false alarms did not diminish the Irish public’s sadness or the media coverage that followed the death of Shane MacGowan. His passing was announced at midday on Thursday and on Friday journalism followed with front-page splashes and blanket coverage. Paeons of praise from the great and the good competed with laments from the rough and ready.
