Call it a by-product of Brexit but Ireland is estimated to host the third highest number of European Works Councils (EWCs) in the European Union after Germany and France. EWCs, talking shops for EU-based employees to engage with large multinationals on transnational issues like corporate restructurings and job losses, are primarily found in the metal, services and chemical sectors, industries not readily associated with Ireland, making the country an unlikely traditional choice as a labour relations base.
