Late into an overcast evening on Friday, July 5, the sky above Sunday’s Well across the River Lee from the central island in Cork City suddenly lit up with bright orange hues. Far from the sun breaking behind the clouds, the colours meeting the skyline came from a large fire at the former Good Shepherd Convent. It was not the first time thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the site as firefighters worked tirelessly to control a blaze at the former Magdalene laundry.
