The furore last year over two Sinn Féin officers providing work references for Michael McMonagle, who had worked in the party’s press office, to the British Heart Foundation was front-page news. Sinn Féin accepts that no reference should have been given for McMonagle, jailed for nine months in November for child sex offences. That is scant consolation for the BHF, who hired McMonagle with facts material to the recruitment process “omitted” and unwanted and unfortunate reputational damage done to their organisation. The fact that they looked for two references from the same employer suggests they were doing thorough due diligence.…
