Has Irish media taken the soup? Has it compromised itself by accepting government subvention when it would never have done so in the past? I’m thinking of the recent awarding of bursaries by Coimisiún na Meán to subsidise journalistic roles that were previously paid for by the local newspapers or whatever media the journalists broadcast on. The commission announced last month it was allocating €5.7 million to Irish news outlets and journalists involved in local reporting. The purpose is to fund up to 100 new or enhanced reporting roles.
