Every year, airlines across Europe require about 5,000 newly trained commercial pilots. These are needed to replace retiring crews and to operate a growing fleet of aircraft. This trend is set to continue over the coming decades as air travel expands further and the fleet grows by a projected 80 per cent in the next 20 years. In Ireland, we train about 100 commercial pilots annually, primarily at Cork, Waterford and Weston airports.
