Two years ago, amidst the escalating Russia-Ukraine war, Germany, Europe’s largest economy, became a net importer of electricity. The change followed the shutdown of Russian gas imports and the closing of the country’s nuclear power plants that largely pre-dated the war. Since then, the German economy has been running on an ever-growing energy deficit.
