On September 16, 1987, Margaret Thatcher visited the town of Middlesbrough in the north-east of England. The local unemployment rate was 28 per cent at the time of her visit and 50,000 jobs had been lost during the eight years the Conservatives had been in power. The Conservatives had been reelected three months earlier with a majority of 102, a small reduction, but still an indication of its dominance. In the north of England, its vote had decreased, especially in the cities and industrial centres. On her visit, Thatcher walked across the barren land of the former Head Wrightson Steelworks.…
