Back in the glory days of provincial newspapers, Cormac McGill was one of the big beasts, even though many of his readers didn’t know his name. As was the fashion at the time, he wrote under a pseudonym. For years, McGill – writing as The Follower – tracked the usually dismal fortunes of the county’s football team in the pages of The Donegal Democrat. He was never slow to remind readers too that he’d had a classical education. One of his favourite Latin phrases popped up regularly whenever there was the slightest danger of Donegal football supporters getting carried away…
