The French sculptor Abel Lafleur had been commissioned by Jules Rimet before. Lafleur had made medals for tournaments in France where Rimet was a football administrator. Rimet was also president of FIFA and Lafleur was the obvious choice to design a trophy for the competition FIFA had planned.
