Michael O’Leary lobbied three government ministers earlier this year calling for reform of the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) during Ireland’s presidency of the European Council. In a letter to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Infrastructure Jack Chambers and Peter Burke, the Minister for Enterprise, the Ryanair chief executive characterised it as a “failed” scheme that creates “indefensible” competitive distortion for the low fares airline. O’Leary also contacted the transport minister Darragh O’Brien on the matter, records released under freedom of information show.
