Fire safety risks, overcrowding, mould, and food safety issues were identified in recent months at some of the country’s biggest refugee accommodation providers. The inspections of privately-run facilities were carried out by the International Protection Accommodation Service (Ipas). It sits under the Department of Justice and is responsible for administering the multi-billion euro private accommodation system.  Inspectors check if centres are fulfilling contractual obligations, looking at the likes of food quality, fire safety, the condition of communal and sleeping areas, as well as adherence to hygiene and other health and safety measures.
