Last week, data protection commissioner Helen Dixon imposed a record €225 million fine on WhatsApp for “severe” breaches of privacy laws. The fine was lower than what the Facebook-owned messaging company had anticipated, even after European regulators directed the commissioner to radically increase the penalty. Nonetheless, WhatsApp is not taking the fine lying down, and said immediately it intended to challenge the decision.
