On Tuesday I took a look under the bonnet at Ireland’s state-owned enterprises (SoEs), to work out what their operating businesses would be worth on the public markets. An obvious implication of such a list is that the companies should be spun out and sold to the highest bidder. But that is not what I was trying to say. Whether the state or the private sector own these businesses, it’s worth understanding what they’re worth. Either they’re worth keeping, and they’re an important part of our national balance sheet. Or they’re worth selling, in which case it’s good to know…
