I am always sceptical of “this changes everything”- type moments. These somewhat random shocks often turn out to be moments of drama integrated calmly back into the general flow of events in due course. The global financial crisis was a shock. Brexit was a shock. Trump was a shock. Covid was a shock. Each shock, at one point or another, was going to change everything. Most everything stayed the same, in the end. And here we all are, a little older, a lot more battered, staring at the horror in Ukraine, asking ourselves will the war itself; the apparent disconnection…
