Another month, another set of blanket fossil fuel subsidies. The Vat cut on gas and electricity bills decided by the Government this Wednesday is just that – a disguised incentive to continue consuming gas (a pure fossil fuel) and electricity (of which two thirds come from fossil fuels). This comes after the similar catch-all excise rebate on petrol, on diesel and €200 credit on domestic electricity bills introduced in March – although I showed at the time that the Exchequer had been recovering much of these through increased Vat receipts on the same energy products.
