In 1992, a case appeared before the US Supreme Court which some felt could reverse the decision in Roe v Wade made 20 years before. In that case – Planned Parenthood v Casey – it turned out that once the draft opinion had been written, one of the Supreme Court Justices, Anthony Kennedy, changed his mind. “That extraordinary switch by a conservative justice stunned anti-abortion forces and soured the internal atmosphere among the brethren as the court’s new term begins,” the Washington Post wrote at the time.
