The finance ministers’ task at the outset of Budget 2023 was to make up for a roughly €2,000 rise in household electricity and gas prices since 2020, plus petrol prices, plus general inflation. The forecast rises are enough to break household budgets and drive voters into the arms of the opposition parties. The increases are also big enough to drag small businesses under.
