It was a special occasion to mark the centenary of the founding of the Blackrock College Past Pupils Union. It was 1998. Ruairi Quinn was guest of honour. Then Labour Party leader and, not long out of the Department of Finance, he was an experienced cabinet minister. He was also a proud graduate of the school and in the opening part of his address he gave eloquent testimony to its importance to him and his family.  Inherent to Ruairi Quinn’s political philosophy would have been the need for Ireland to transition towards a more equitable society.
