There is a feeling amongst some tech entrepreneurs here that the headcount cull we have seen across a lot of Big Tech in the last few months was not driven by the business need to reduce costs/increase margins, or indeed even forced through by rattled shareholders, but an opportunistic attempt to trim down bloated sales, marketing, and quality teams just because others had led the charge. Safety in numbers, and all that. As early as May 2020, Tech Crunch was highlighting the vulnerability of such positions in the context of the pandemic fallout.
