The appointment of three new overseas journalists by RTÉ before Christmas is not only fantastic news for its Irish audience, but also a welcome move against the trend that has seen cash-strapped newsrooms around the world cut foreign correspondents in favour of poorly paid local freelancers, standardised newswire material or simply less and less coverage of what is happening around the world.
