Two distinct legal actions have been initiated by football clubs against UEFA, the organisation that controls the game in Europe, and its parent FIFA, the world body. The first was taken by three famous clubs, Juventus of Turin, Barcelona and Real Madrid, seeking to revive the project for a breakaway European Super League, aborted in 2021. The three had been participants, along with nine other leading clubs from England, Spain and Italy in proposing a ‘closed’ league, initially confined to the founding members without automatic promotion and relegation.
