In their election manifestos, each of the three larger parties pledged to re-examine the entire taxation system, should they be returned to government. That is a very good idea. Sinn Fein pledged to remove the property tax. That is a bad idea. Other parties pledged to keep it low and slow its increase. Also bad ideas. Without taxing land properly, we can’t redistribute wealth, and help solve our housing crisis. It is true however that the property tax is small, inefficient, and brings in a small amount of money.
