If there are any lessons to be learned from the Russian war in Ukraine that has now raged for more than one year, these lessons highlight an ugly arithmetic of geopolitical confrontations. Ukraine is fighting for its sovereign existence. The West is trying to have its cake (weakening Russia) and eat it (making sure the cost of sanctions is not too high for Western economies). Sure, there are high costs from the European energy crisis triggered by the war.
