German cinema is on an Oscar high as All Quiet on the Western Front became the most successful German-language film ever – at least in terms of awards received at the annual Californian shindig. This was despite German film critics’ general dislike of the Netflix production, with many suggesting that the film-makers adopted Erich Maria Remarque’s novel – and especially the name All Quiet on the Western Front – due to its obvious ‘brand recognition’, especially in the English-speaking world, while making a film that actually had very little to do with the source text.
