A tearful goodbye in front of a 1940s airplane flying to Lisbon, from where the passengers, fleeing the Nazis, will proceed onwards to the United States is of course the ending of the classic movie Casablanca, from 1942. A similar scenario also features at the conclusion of Transatlantic, which is peppered with many references to the cinema of the 1940s and also very much plays with the form of the World War Two genre film.
