Christmas really only began for us when Dad brought home the Irish television gospel of the 1980s and early 1990s, the RTÉ Guide. On its pages, we marked faithfully the films we wanted to see, made a mental note of when getting up early would be necessary and when we had to coax our parents to let us stay up longer to watch “the film”.  While collective television-watching is perhaps dying out as the number of available screens increases and streaming platforms offering global-oriented and varied content mushrooms further, there remains an undoubted connection between film culture and Christmas.
