Campaigning in elections is both hard and weird. Those who put themselves before the people expend energy, money, their time, their friends and family’s time, and their reputations, all to ask an increasingly sceptical and angry public whether it feels they deserve a chance to serve it. Hard and weird as the campaigns were, figuring out what it all means is proving somewhat harder for many in the commentariat. I’m going to use this column to try to fix that.
