In Germany, people often say that the city of Hamburg has bad weather, meaning a wet and mild Irish-like climate. Certainly, Hamburg was looking quite Hibernian when I visited the city recently – it was 19 degrees, with sunny bouts of light rain. Being dominated by a river and a quays leading to a wider stretch of sea, there is also a touch of Dublin about the city, a Dublin, of course, with a Scandinavian-North German touch. Reminders of the Hanseatic trading past are everywhere to be found, which linked the city to a myriad of other Baltic trading cities. …
