Paschal Donohoe’s election as President of the Eurogroup is a big win for Ireland and for small countries. Donohoe beat out Nadia Calvino of Spain. Her candidacy was backed by the heavyweights of the Eurogroup: France, Germany, Italy and Spain, who between them have more than 80 per cent of the Eurogroup’s population and GDP. Donohoe, by contrast was, supported by the Eurogroup’s small Northern and Eastern nations. Each country, big and small, gets one vote.
